If you've just got yourself a new tattoo or planning to get one, remember that proper tattoo care is essential for the design on your skin to stay perfect and fresh in the years to come.

A professionally done tattoo causes only a superficial abrasion to the skin so with the right care, it heals quickly. The average time that a tattoo takes to heal is about a week or two. The period between the completion of your tattoo and when the fluid from the tattoo completely ceases to ooze, is the most vital.

You should start by wiping the area around the tattoo every 15 minutes or so starting from when you get the tattoo. Continue wiping until the fluid from the skin stops oozing out. You need to make sure you follow this process so that dead cells from your skin don't stick and coagulate on the surface of the tattoo.

Do not wash the tattooed area right after getting it tattooed. Water retards the healing process.

Each time you wipe off the fluid oozing out from the skin, apply a coat of any anti-bacterial healing ointment. Application of the ointment is necessary to prevent the tattooed area from getting dry. This is why you need to keep wiping and then layering the ointment. Your fingers should be clean when you are applying the ointment.

Do not bandage the tattooed area at any point in time. The tattooed area will heal faster minus a bandage.

Once your skin stops oozing, apply the ointment four times in a day. Just before getting into bed at night, wipe the tattoo with alcohol to prevent a build-up of microorganisms.

Before stepping under the shower, apply a coat of Vaseline on the tattooed area so that the tattoo stays dry. Wipe off the Vaseline after you get out from under the shower.

If you notice small rashes or pimples around the tattoo, discontinue using whatever haling ointment you are using. Try using another brand of healing ointment that does not contain the same ingredients.

You may sometimes be allergic to the colors using in a tattoo. This may result in swollen or itchy skin around the tattooed area. Apply a corticosteriod cream and shield the tattoo from direct sunlight.

Use the best products you can find for tattoo care so that the colors of the tattoo don't fade. If you react to any product or redness and swelling continues around the tattoo, get in touch with your tattoo artist.
